Journalist and content creator Àngel Aguiló Palou has sparked a wave of criticism on social media for a video in which he labels visitors from Madrid as "invaders" and "unbearable".
Mallorcan communicator Àngel Aguiló Palou has ignited controversy on social media with a video in which he lashes out at Madrid tourists visiting the island during the summer. In the recording, shared on August 1 on his X account, the former director of the IB3 programme Jo en sé més que tu claims that Madrileños "you are disliked, you are basically unbearable, you are invaders".
Aguiló, who has thousands of followers, criticises what he calls the "cayetanada" and hurls several insults at them. "You are people who understand nothing," he states, accusing them of a constant lack of manners and education. "You need to understand that if you enter a bar, a restaurant, a bakery: 'hello, good morning', that is the first thing you should say".
In his speech, aligned with the stereotypes of Catalanism, the influencer also gives advice to Madrileños on how to try to blend in: "If you want to seem native, which concerns you quite a bit, it is crucial that you do not wear a shirt, some castellanos, and a 200-euro swimsuit to go to the beach".
The message continued on X, where Aguiló recounted a supposed incident in a local bakery. "What is this brossat!?" a Madrileño (who was at least named Cayetano) said to the shop assistant. "I breathed, closed my eyes, and I got a bit of an ulcer," the journalist wrote, assuming that visitors should know the culinary vocabulary of the region.
"Even if you have been coming here for 20 years, you are not from here. There is nothing worse than a cayetano bringing another cayetano and explaining the ins and outs of the place and the locals, natives or people from the reserve as if he were one of them".
Reactions have been swift. The national deputy of Vox for the Balearic Islands, Jorge Campos, has been particularly harsh: "Nowadays, any intellectual indigent can make a video spouting nonsense and it goes viral. Nobody knows this guy in Mallorca. He represents no one. He is a poor man spewing the usual separatist message, very minority in the Balearics".
Journalist Juan Soto Ivars has also responded to the video, pointing out that "in Madrid, where a large part of the population comes from outside, the purebred cat does not jump out with its vest and cap to speak like that to those who do not have the gene. That is why, to a large extent, Madrid is the best city in Spain".
The controversy has once again brought to the forefront the debate on tourism phobia in the islands and the coexistence between residents and visitors, an issue that intensifies every summer in Mallorca. For now, Aguiló has not deleted the video nor issued any apology.
