The Civil Guard discovers the largest haul of counterfeit jewellery in the Balearics, valued at hundreds of millions, in an industrial estate in Palma.
The Civil Guard has completed an operation that uncovered the largest seizure of counterfeit jewellery recorded in the Balearics. The discovery occurred on June 14 in a warehouse in the industrial estate of Son Castelló, Palma, where over 115,000 pieces replicating designs from international brands were hidden.
The operation, carried out by the Fiscal and Border Patrols of Porto Cristo, began months ago after analysing documentation from previous inspections in shops on the island. The investigation led to a warehouse functioning as a logistics centre from which the merchandise was distributed both wholesale and retail.
The final count reveals 115,535 seized pieces, including 38,493 bracelets, 35,994 pairs of earrings, 22,064 necklaces, 10,811 bangles, and 8,173 rings. The scale of the seizure necessitated that specialist experts from the affected brands travelled from Madrid to assess the material.
According to initial estimates, had the lot been sold as original, it would have reached a value of hundreds of millions of euros, although it was marketed at much lower prices. The operation remains open, and for now, there are four individuals under investigation as alleged perpetrators of a crime against industrial property.
Authorities warn that the trade in counterfeits not only harms brands and legitimate businesses but also poses a risk to consumer health, as these pieces lack the quality and safety controls required by European legislation and can cause allergic reactions.
The investigation is ongoing, and further actions are not ruled out in the coming days.
