A woman travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle was filmed holding a portable beach cooler solely with her right arm while riding on the Palma airport motorway. The incident occurred in broad daylight and poses a serious risk to road safety.
An image that has left drivers on the Palma airport motorway stunned. A woman, who was travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle, was captured carrying a blue beach cooler held only with her right arm, without any approved restraint. The vehicle was heading towards the Balearic capital during daylight hours, and the scene was recorded by another road user.
An infraction that jeopardises the stability of the motorcycle
Traffic regulations are clear: the load on any vehicle must be properly secured, must not compromise stability, and must not protrude dangerously. In the case of motorcycles, a passenger carrying a large and heavy item in their hands poses a serious risk to their balance and that of the driver. According to road safety sources, this action could result in a fine of up to 200 euros, in addition to the obvious danger of falling or colliding.
The cooler, of considerable size, prevented the passenger from holding onto the vehicle properly, increasing the risk of losing balance and falling onto the road. Eyewitnesses reported that the woman appeared to be struggling to hold the cooler while the motorcycle was travelling at a steady speed.
This is not the first time: history of similar recklessness
This is not an isolated incident in Mallorca. Just a few weeks ago, another motorcyclist was caught riding along Avenida Gabriel Roca in Palma with an inflatable beach mattress that exceeded the dimensions of his own motorcycle. That incident, also recorded, took place in front of the Congress Palace and generated a great uproar on social media. Authorities remind that such behaviours are not only punishable but also endanger the lives of those involved and others.
For the motorcycle driver, the infraction could be even more serious, as allowing the passenger to transport such an object without restraint could be considered negligent driving. The Civil Guard Traffic Division has not confirmed whether the individuals involved have been identified, but warns that the images are being investigated to identify the vehicle and take appropriate measures.
Tips for safe motorcycle travel this summer
With the arrival of summer and the increase in trips to the beaches, authorities remind the importance of respecting load regulations on motorcycles. The cooler, umbrella, or any other beach item must be transported in an approved luggage compartment, in a well-secured backpack, or, if not possible, in a suitable vehicle. It should never be carried in the passenger's hands, as any sudden movement can destabilise the motorcycle and cause an accident.
The image, which is already circulating on social media, has been harshly criticised by users, who label it as "reckless" and "irresponsible". Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Traffic reminds that safety is everyone's responsibility, and that actions like this are not only illegal but can have fatal consequences. The next time someone thinks about carrying the cooler as a passenger, they might think twice before risking their life and that of others.
