The PSIB-PSOE will present a proposal to the full council of Mallorca to restrict vehicle access to the entire Serra de Tramuntana, using the measure already in place in the Formentor peninsula as a model.

The PSIB-PSOE will present a proposal at the next full council meeting of Mallorca to limit vehicle traffic throughout the Serra de Tramuntana. The initiative is inspired by the measure already applied in the Formentor peninsula, where access for private vehicles has been restricted during the high season for several months.

The socialists aim to tackle the "collapse" of traffic that the municipalities in the Serra suffer, especially during the summer months. According to island deputy Jaume Mateu, the situation is "unsustainable" for residents and the natural environment itself.

A model that already works in Formentor

The traffic limitation in Formentor, implemented by the Mallorca Council, has managed to reduce the number of vehicles in the area during weekends and holidays. Visitors must park in park-and-ride facilities and access via shuttle bus.

"It is a fragile environment that calls for regulating vehicle access," Mateu stated during a press conference on the road to the Sóller diversion, a route that the socialists describe as the "paradigm of collapse and inaction of the Council."

The PSOE denounces that, despite the promises of the PP, no concrete measures have been taken. Spokesperson Joan Ferrer stated that "all the promises of the PP have come to nothing" and criticized the Council for "doing nothing for its people or for the environment of the Serra."

Complementary measures for residents and visitors

The socialist proposal is not limited to restricting access. It includes the creation of a network of park-and-ride facilities outside the Serra, the implementation of shuttle buses for visitors, the reinforcement of TIB lines that access the Tramuntana, and better coordination between administrations.

"The municipalities of the Serra are overwhelmed and cannot take measures on their own," explained Mateu, who emphasized that the measures must be accompanied by funding to ensure their proper implementation.

The goal is to "guarantee the mobility of residents and reduce visitor traffic in the Serra," according to the deputy. The initiative will be voted on at the next full council meeting, although the PSOE is aware that it will need the support of other groups to move forward.

Ferrer has indicated that the law promoted by the Minister of Mobility, Jaume Galmés, to limit vehicle entry to the island "will not prosper" due to the opposition from their partners in Vox. Therefore, the socialists are betting on a more limited and realistic measure.

Impact on the residents of the Serra

If approved, the limitation would affect all municipalities in the Serra de Tramuntana, from Andratx to Pollença, including Sóller, Valldemossa, Deià, and Fornalutx. Residents would be able to circulate freely, but visitors would have to leave their cars in park-and-ride facilities and use public transport.

The measure aims to alleviate the saturation these towns experience every summer when the roads become congested and residents face difficulties in their daily mobility. The PSOE hopes that the proposal will be debated and voted on in the coming weeks and expects the PP to "rectify its inaction."

Meanwhile, drivers travelling through the Serra de Tramuntana can check traffic conditions on the Mallorca Council website or through mobility apps. If the proposal goes ahead, it is expected to be implemented from the next tourist season.
