The driver of a Seat Ibiza managed to exit the vehicle just seconds before the flames engulfed it completely. The fire forced a partial closure of the Ma-19 towards Llucmajor on Thursday afternoon.
A Seat Ibiza was completely burnt out on Thursday afternoon on the airport highway in Palma, near Es Molinar, heading towards Llucmajor. The fire, which originated for reasons still undetermined, forced traffic restrictions and caused significant delays on the Ma-19 and the Vía de Cintura.
The driver of the car, who was travelling on the road, noticed a column of smoke coming from the engine and reacted immediately. He stopped the vehicle on the hard shoulder and exited the cabin just seconds before the car began to burn. According to sources from the Palma Fire Brigade, the driver's quick action prevented any personal injuries.
The flames spread rapidly, and within minutes, the vehicle was completely burnt out. The thick smoke that rose was visible from various points in the bay of Palma, alerting numerous drivers who notified the emergency services.
Several units from the Palma Fire Brigade arrived at the scene, extinguishing the fire and preventing the flames from spreading to nearby vegetation or reaching other vehicles. Local Police from Palma, the Civil Guard Traffic Unit, and personnel from the Mallorca Roads Department also attended, assisting in traffic regulation and the removal of the burnt car.
An ambulance from SAMU-061 arrived in the area as a precaution, but their intervention was not needed, as the driver was unharmed. The fire did not cause any injuries.
The incident forced traffic restrictions on the Ma-19 during the firefighting efforts, resulting in long queues towards Llucmajor. The delays also extended to the Vía de Cintura, where traffic remained heavily slowed for much of the afternoon. Once the fire was extinguished, a tow truck removed the burnt vehicle, and traffic gradually returned to normal.
The causes of the fire are still under investigation, although initial hypotheses suggest a possible mechanical failure. The driver has given a statement to the Civil Guard Traffic Unit, which has opened proceedings to clarify what happened.
Local residents and regular drivers on the Ma-19 have expressed concern over the frequency of such incidents on a road that handles a high volume of traffic, especially in summer. The Mallorca Council reminds the importance of regular vehicle inspections to avoid breakdowns that could lead to risky situations.
