Agents of the Local Police of Palma assisted a 77-year-old woman who had been going around on an EMT bus for three complete rounds without knowing where to get off. They located her thanks to a citizen's alert and returned her to her home in Cas Capiscol.
On the afternoon of Friday, July 31, a tragedy could have unfolded for a 77-year-old resident of Palma who, disoriented, had been going around on an EMT bus for hours without remembering her home address. It was the swift action of a citizen, the vehicle's driver, and a patrol from the Local Police that allowed the woman to return home safe and sound.
The events occurred around 21:00 in the Plaza de España, one of the main public transport interchanges in the Balearic capital. A passerby alerted the agents of the Preventive Action Group (GAP), who were conducting surveillance in the area, that an elderly passenger seemed lost and showed signs of confusion inside a bus stopped near the monument to King Jaume I, heading towards the Costa del Gas.
Upon boarding the vehicle, the police spoke with the EMT driver, whose cooperation was key in clarifying the situation. The worker explained that the woman had already completed three full rounds of the route, unable to remember which was her stop or the direction of her home. During all that time, she had been travelling without a clear destination, trapped in confusion that prevented her from orienting herself.
The agents confirmed that the elderly woman was in a significant state of disorientation and exhibited symptoms compatible with a possible memory disorder, as she could not provide basic information about her identity or her residence. The priority shifted to identifying her and locating her family as soon as possible.
After conducting various checks in the municipal registry database, the police were able to fully identify the woman and find out her address. Meanwhile, from the 092 base, it was confirmed that the elderly woman's daughter and other relatives had already started searching for her, experiencing moments of growing anxiety as they had not heard from her.
Once her identity and address were confirmed, the patrol personally transported the woman to her home, located in the Cas Capiscol neighbourhood. There, several family members, including her daughter, were waiting for her, receiving the elderly woman with evident relief and in perfect health, putting an end to several hours of uncertainty.
The Local Police of Palma wanted to highlight the importance of citizen collaboration, the work of public transport professionals, and the coordination of security forces to address such situations, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to the aging population. Gestures like that of the woman who alerted the authorities or the attention of the EMT driver were decisive in ensuring the intervention concluded happily.
This episode serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of elderly people with memory problems or neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the importance of remaining vigilant towards anyone who may appear disoriented.
