The Local Police arrested a 53-year-old woman on Aragón Street after hitting three officers and refusing a breathalyser test.
Last Thursday, the Local Police of Palma arrested a 53-year-old woman of Spanish nationality as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of assault against law enforcement officers and another against road safety, after assaulting three officers on Aragón Street. The arrest occurred at 01:40 hours, after the driver parked her car blocking a pedestrian crossing and part of the bike lane.
According to two citizens who reported to the Immediate Intervention Unit (UII) patrol, the woman went to a nearby shop and returned with a can of beer in her hand. Upon hearing the foreign accent of the witnesses, she confronted them with serious insults and racist expressions.
While the officers were taking statements from the witnesses, the involved woman also began to insult the police officers with a very agitated attitude, belittling their work. One of the officers detected that the woman emitted a strong smell of alcohol and showed obvious signs of intoxication, prompting the request for the presence of the Accident Vehicles Unit (UVAC).
An officer from the UVAC informed the driver of the legal procedure to carry out the breathalyser test and the legal consequences of refusal. However, the woman firmly refused to blow, maintaining an aggressive attitude and directing further insults at the officer operating the breathalyser.
The escalation culminated when the arrested woman attempted to flee running towards the roadway. When restrained by the arm by the officer conducting the test to prevent her from being hit by a vehicle, the woman turned and punched him in the arm. Another officer intervened to pull her away from traffic and received a blow to the chest. A third officer, who approached to provide support, was scratched on the arm and dodged an attempted bite.
The officers subdued the woman and proceeded with her formal arrest, taking her to police facilities. None of the officers required medical attention for their injuries. The detained woman's car was immobilised and towed by the municipal crane to the Sa Riera depot.
The arrested woman, who will now have to answer to justice for the crimes of assault and against road safety, was placed at the disposal of the judiciary after giving her statement at the police station.
