A 52-year-old security guard has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for stealing €4,495 on 29 occasions from an armoured van in Palma. The accused admitted the facts and accepted an agreement that suspends the sentence.
A 52-year-old security guard has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for a continued offence of misappropriation after stealing €4,495 on 29 occasions from an armoured van in Palma. The accused, who worked for a security company, acknowledged the facts during the trial held yesterday in a criminal court in the Balearic capital.
The sentence, resulting from a plea agreement between the prosecution, the defence, and the affected company, is suspended for three years as long as the convicted person does not commit new offences and returns the stolen money. The magistrate issued the ruling immediately, and the verdict is already final.
A repeated modus operandi 29 times
The thefts occurred between April 7 and June 27, 2025. The guard, who had access to the keys of the money bags, took advantage of moments when he was alone inside the armoured van to extract banknotes. According to his own confession, he appropriated amounts ranging from €50 to €495 each time, until reaching a total haul of €4,495.
The security company detected the disappearance of the money and filed a complaint with the National Police, providing recordings from the security cameras. Investigators carried out various proceedings and eventually arrested the worker on July 29, 2025.
Plea agreement and suspension of the sentence
The prosecution charged the employee with a continued offence of misappropriation and initially requested a sentence of two and a half years in prison, in addition to the return of the money. However, the parties reached an agreement before the hearing, which reduced the sentence to 21 months in prison and included the suspension of the execution of the sentence.
The agreement was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the accused's lawyer, Álvaro Martín Olmos, and the company's attorney. The magistrate approved the agreement and issued the ruling immediately, which is already final. The convicted person must return the €4,495 to the security company as a condition for maintaining the suspension of the sentence.
For the residents of Palma, this case highlights the importance of internal controls in cash transport companies. Although the haul is not large, the repeated thefts over nearly three months demonstrate a lack of supervision that the company has already corrected, according to sources close to the case. Citizens can rest assured: security systems in armoured vans have been strengthened.
The convicted person, who had no prior record, avoided imprisonment thanks to the agreement. He must now comply with the condition of not committing any offences for three years and returning the money. If he does so, the sentence will be extinguished.
