Palma recorded an unemployment rate of 3.73% in June, the lowest for this month in two decades. Social Security registrations reached a record 292,303 people.
The Balearic capital has been experiencing months of positive data in the labour market, and June was no exception. The unemployment rate stood at 3.73%, the lowest level for this month since unified records began two decades ago.
Social Security registrations also marked a historic high for a June, with 292,303 people registered. This figure represents 42.85% of the total registered in the Balearic Islands and consolidates the positive trend the city has been experiencing.
The Councillor for Commerce, Catering and Self-Employed, and President of PalmaActiva, Lupe Ferrer, highlighted that Palma's labour market continues to show a favourable evolution during the peak summer months, driven by the year-on-year growth in registrations and hiring.
“The labour market in Palma maintains a positive evolution during the peak summer months, especially due to the year-on-year growth in registrations and hiring,” Ferrer assured.
Hiring on the rise in July
In July, 17,266 contracts were formalised in Palma, of which 10,324 were permanent and 6,942 were temporary. Year-on-year hiring grew by 15.12%, although it fell by 7.37% compared to June.
Permanent hiring recorded a month-on-month decrease of 13.73%, but in year-on-year terms, it increased by 18.27%. The hospitality sector signed the most contracts, with 4,225, followed by commerce with 2,742.
Among women, the most hired occupations were waitresses (1,253) and cleaners (1,213). For men, waiter (1,200) and salesperson (456) topped the list.
Unemployment rises in July but falls year-on-year
By the end of July, Palma counted 11,909 unemployed people, of which 6,885 are women and 5,024 are men. The number of unemployed women is the lowest for a July in the last 20 years.
Compared to June, unemployment increased by 588 people, a 5.19% rise. However, compared to July 2025, unemployment decreased by 227 people, a 1.87% drop.
The month-on-month increase affected all groups: women rose by 5.39%, young people by 7.33%, and those over 45 by 3.15%. In year-on-year terms, unemployment fell among women (-2.06%) and those over 45 (-5.16%), but rose among young people by 4.12%.
By sectors, the largest decreases in unemployment in July occurred in agriculture (-14.63%) and commerce (-11.30%). Among women, receptionists and hairdressers saw their unemployment reduced, while among men, accommodation services highlighted a decrease of 3.01%.
These data, compiled by PalmaActiva, confirm that the capital maintains its labour strength even in a July when unemployment historically tends to rise due to the closure of seasonal campaigns.
