The municipality of Algaida unveils a space for reflection in the cemetery with a sculpture by Pere Josep Pascual Sureda. The event, which included a theatrical performance, served to honour the victims of Franco's regime.

The sculpture Mural d’en Frau, created by artist Pere Josep Pascual Sureda, now presides over the Racó de la Memòria in Algaida. The new space, located at the entrance of the municipal cemetery, aims to be a place of reflection and tribute to the victims of repression. The work, made of iron on a base of marés stone, blends into a landscaped environment that invites remembrance.

An emotional event with theatre and speeches

The inauguration, held yesterday, featured a performance by Tallats de Lluna, which presented La sang vessada. Mayor Margalida Fullana emphasised that the corner aims to prevent forgetfulness: “There is a second death, the one that comes when we stop pronouncing a person's name, when we stop telling their story.” Fullana called for civic commitment so that no one is ever persecuted for their ideas again.

Margalida Puigserver, a member of the Comissió de Memòria Democràtica d’Algaida, spoke as a relative of a victim: Pere Llull Fullana, a republican mayor of Algaida who was executed and buried in Son Coletes. Puigserver recalled that the event coincided with the fifth anniversary of the identification and return of his remains to the family.

A regulatory framework for memory

The Racó de la Memòria is one of the first actions derived from the Municipal Ordinance on Democratic Memory, approved in May with the votes of PSIB and Més. The regulation promotes municipal actions from an inclusive and restorative perspective. For the residents, this corner becomes a meeting point where art and nature unite to remember those who suffered repression.

The mayor highlighted the human dimension of the victims: “Knowing their story is the best antidote against hate.” For her part, Puigserver expressed the hope that the space not only remembers the past but also invites reflection on freedom and democracy. The cemetery of Algaida, now with this corner, offers a place of memory open to all citizens.
