The SAI-DIC, launched in October 2025, has assisted 82 cases in nine months. The Consell announces a new service with therapeutic stays for 2027.
The Comprehensive Home Care Service for children with intellectual disabilities and behavioural support needs (SAI-DIC) from the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) has assisted 82 children in its first nine months of operation. The service, free of charge and covering the entire island, offers specialised intervention in homes.
According to the Consell de Mallorca, the service was launched in October 2025 and has 100 places. Multidisciplinary teams intervene directly in homes, in coordination with social, health, and educational services, aiming to improve the quality of life for children and support their families.
Since its launch, 41 cases have been assisted in the Palma area, 20 in Inca, and 21 in Manacor. The service has reached both the most populated municipalities and numerous towns in the interior and eastern Mallorca.
The president of IMAS and island councillor for Social Welfare, Guillermo Sánchez, highlighted that bringing professionals closer to homes improves care and provides essential support to families in their daily lives. “It is a service that allows us to intervene in a personalised manner, prevent situations of greater complexity, and avoid, whenever possible, more intensive resources,” he emphasised.
The accumulated experience has highlighted the need to expand the network of specialised resources. Therefore, the Consell will launch a new service in 2027 that will offer temporary therapeutic stays, with professional care 24 hours a day, aimed at children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and severe behavioural disorders.
“We are talking about a natural evolution of the model that we have promoted this legislature. First, financial aid was provided to fund stays for family respite; then, the SAI-DIC brought specialised care to homes, and now we will incorporate a high-intensity resource to respond to the most complex cases without ever losing the family bond,” added the councillor.
The SAI-DIC serves families from municipalities such as Palma, Calvià, Marratxí, Sóller, Andratx, Inca, sa Pobla, Muro, Alcúdia, Pollença, Sineu, Binissalem, Consell, Manacor, Porreres, Campos, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, San Juan, Algaida, Felanitx, Montuïri, Artà, and Son Servera, among others.
