Ponent Store, in Port d'Andratx, has commemorated its 50th anniversary with a gathering of customers and family. Catalina Esteva, its owner, transformed the family bar into a fashion store when she was 18 years old.
Ponent Store, in the heart of Port d'Andratx, has reached half a century of existence. To celebrate, its owner, Catalina Esteva, gathered customers, friends, and family at an event that highlighted the history of this local business.
From Bar to Fashion Store: The Turn That Changed Everything
In 1976, at just 18 years old, Catalina Esteva convinced her grandmother to convert the family bar into a fashion store. "It was a significant gamble because we didn't know this world, but we believed it could work," she recalls. The business, then on the front line of the port, took a leap into the unknown.
The family came from the restaurant sector, so venturing into fashion was a huge challenge. "With hard work, dedication, and the support of our customers, time has shown us that it was the right decision," Esteva adds. Today, fifty years later, that gamble has become a benchmark for local commerce.
The Generational Shift and a Team of Five Female Workers
In the early years, grandmother and granddaughter ran the establishment together. In 1993, Cristina joined as the first employee, who developed her entire career at Ponent until retirement. Currently, the store has a team of five female workers, all of whom keep the essence of personal service alive.
"The most beautiful thing is still seeing people come in who have been shopping here for decades and now come accompanied by their children or grandchildren. That is what gives meaning to these fifty years," the owner states. The store has witnessed the evolution of Port d'Andratx and its visitors.
Digital Competition and the Value of Personalised Attention
Despite the pressure from large brands and e-commerce, Ponent has maintained its identity. The key, according to Esteva, lies in the closeness and loyalty of customers. "We don't just sell clothes; we sell trust and a service that can't be found online," she comments.
The anniversary brought together numerous people who have been part of the store's history. The celebration served to highlight the role of local commerce in the life of the Port. Five decades later, Ponent remains one of the most emblematic establishments in the municipality, a place where fashion and friendship go hand in hand.
