The Calvià Town Hall and the Calvià 365 Foundation have presented four new officially approved hiking trails as PR-MA, the first of their kind on the island. The routes connect Peguera with Es Capdellà and traverse the Vall Verda, Sa Vinya, and the Font de Sa Cometa, with varying levels of difficulty.
The Calvià Town Hall has launched four new hiking routes officially recognised as PR-MA Short Distance Trails, the first of this type on the island of Mallorca. The official presentation took place this morning in Peguera, at the starting point of one of the routes, and was attended by municipal representatives and the Calvià 365 Foundation.
The new trails, which total over 20 kilometres, aim to bring residents and visitors closer to the most unique landscapes of the municipality's interior. From pine forests to fields, passing through streams and ancient possessions, each route offers a different experience tailored to various fitness levels.
Four routes for everyone
The first route, PR-MA 1 Peguera - Es Capdellà, is 5.8 kilometres long and connects the tourist hub of Peguera with the village of Es Capdellà. It is of low difficulty and runs through pine forests, cultivated areas, and the torrent des Gorg. One of its attractions is the defensive towers of Son Vic Vell (15th century) and d'en Boira (14th century), remnants of Mediterranean piracy. Additionally, it is suitable for Nordic walking.
The second route, PR-MA 2 La Vall Verda, is circular and measures 5.9 kilometres. It is accessible to all audiences and is notable for its botanical richness, with views of Puig de Galatzó and Mola de s'Esclop. Along the route, one can see pine forests, holm oaks, and examples of rural architecture such as the possessions of Son Vic Vell and Son Cabot.
The PR-MA 3 Sa Vinya, at 6.5 kilometres, traverses ancient agricultural paths of the public estate of Galatzó. It connects the houses of the possession with fields and showcases terraces, charcoal kilns, a bread oven, and traditional hydraulic systems. It also has archaeological value, with three Talayotic sites along the route.
The fourth route, PR-MA 4 Font de Sa Cometa, is the shortest, at 3.4 kilometres in a circular path, ideal for families. It runs through pine forests, scrubland, and marjades with olive trees, focusing on the historical water resources of the public estate of Galatzó.
Commitment to tourism diversification and local heritage
According to the Calvià Town Hall, these routes are a firm step towards the tourism diversification of the municipality, known mainly for its beaches and sun-and-sand offerings. With these trails, the aim is to highlight Calvià's natural, rural, and historical heritage, providing an active leisure alternative for both residents and tourists.
The Calvià 365 Foundation, the driving force behind the project, has emphasised that the PR-MA approval ensures that the trails meet the signage and safety standards of the Mountain Sports Federation. For the residents of Calvià, these routes represent a new opportunity to discover unknown corners of their own municipality without needing to travel far from home.
The presentation event included an initial walk along the Peguera-Es Capdellà route, attended by local authorities and hiking enthusiasts. The expectation is that the routes will be operational immediately, with information panels and signage at each starting point.
For those wishing to try them out, it is recommended to wear suitable footwear, bring water, and use sun protection, especially during the summer months. The routes are open year-round and are free of charge. The Town Hall has announced that it is considering the possibility of adding more officially approved trails in the future, consolidating Calvià as a destination for active tourism in Mallorca.
