The municipality of Calvià raised this Friday the 15 Q Quality Tourism flags that distinguish its beaches, maintaining its position as the top municipality in the Balearics and the third in Spain in terms of these distinctions.

The official flag-raising ceremony for the 15 Q Quality Tourism flags was held this Friday at Buguevil·lia beach, presided over by the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, accompanied by the deputy mayor for Tourism, Beaches and Coast, Elisa Monserrat, and the delegated councillor for the Cas Català area, Esperanza Catalá.

With this event, the municipality formalises the revalidation of the 15 Q flags obtained this year, a recognition that keeps it as the third municipality in Spain and the first in the Balearics with the highest number of quality distinctions for its beaches. The flags were awarded last June by the general director of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality and Sustainability (ICTES), Fernando Fraile.

Fifteen beaches certified with the Q of Quality

The beaches displaying the Q for Quality Tourism are Buguevil·lia, Illetes spa, Cala Contesa, Portals Nous, S’Oratori, Es Carregador, Palmanova, Son Maties, Magaluf, Cala Vinyes, Ses Penyes Rotges (El Toro), Santa Ponça, and the beaches of La Romana, Torà and Palmira, the last three located in Peguera.

Obtaining these certifications requires passing a rigorous independent audit process to verify compliance with the international standard UNE-ISO 13009, agreed upon by a hundred countries. The evaluation examines aspects such as cleanliness and selective waste collection, safety, rescue and first aid, visitor information, accessibility to the bathing area, sanitary facilities, and leisure equipment, among others.

Commitment to excellence

The mayor Juan Antonio Amengual highlighted that revalidating the 15 flags demonstrates the municipality's commitment to excellence and the continuous improvement of the services offered by urban beaches. He stated that keeping Calvià as the top municipality in the Balearics and third in Spain in this recognition reflects the high level of quality achieved by its beaches.

The deputy mayor for Tourism, Beaches and Coast, Elisa Monserrat, emphasised the technical work required to maintain these certifications. She pointed out that behind each flag lies a continued effort to pass audits and ensure the highest levels of cleanliness, accessibility, and safety, with the aim of providing both residents and tourists with an environment managed to the highest quality standards.

For her part, the delegated councillor for Cas Català, Esperanza Catalá, highlighted the importance of the central flag-raising event being held at Buguevil·lia beach. In her view, the certification not only serves as a tourist attraction for the area but also guarantees that residents have access to a well-maintained, accessible coastline with quality services.

The Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality and Sustainability (ICTES) is a business association representing various subsectors of Spanish tourism, with governance bodies that include the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, through the Secretary of State for Tourism, autonomous communities, and local entities via the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

For the residents of Calvià, this certification translates into cleaner, safer, and more accessible beaches throughout the year, with services such as rescue, first aid, and selective waste collection. A luxury that undoubtedly invites enjoyment of the coastline with complete peace of mind.
