An African air mass has arrived in Mallorca and temperatures are soaring this Sunday. Aemet has activated an orange alert in the interior and south of the island, where highs of 39 degrees are expected.

The second heatwave of the summer is hitting Mallorca hard. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has raised the alert level in several areas of the island due to the arrival of an African air mass bringing extreme temperatures. In Llucmajor, the mercury already reached 39 degrees on Saturday, and in Porreres it hit 38.

The interior and south of Mallorca are under orange alert for high temperatures, with forecasts of highs of 39 degrees. In the Serra de Tramuntana, the alert is yellow, with 38 degrees, and in the north and northeast there is also a yellow alert, although there the thermometer will not exceed 37 degrees. The only area spared from alerts this Sunday is the eastern part of Mallorca, where temperatures will drop slightly compared to Saturday.

Suspended dust and morning mist

The easterly wind brings with it suspended dust from the desert, which will cause morning mist and a sky with cloudy intervals that will tend to be mostly clear throughout the day. Air quality will worsen during the central hours, so Aemet recommends avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours.

For Monday, July 13, the forecast indicates clear skies with mist and the possibility of some fog banks at dawn. The suspended dust will still be present. Daytime temperatures will drop slightly in the west of each island, but the interior of Mallorca will remain under orange alert and the rest of the island under yellow.

Intense heat will continue on Tuesday

On Tuesday, July 14, the situation will not improve. The skies will be mostly clear, with mist and possible morning fog banks, and the suspended dust will not relent. Temperatures will remain unchanged or slightly increase, and the wind will be light from the south with coastal breezes. So, anyone planning to take a dip should prepare for relentless heat.

This heatwave, which began on July 5, is expected to be long-lasting. Residents of municipalities like Llucmajor or Porreres have already felt the heat. For those living inland, such as in Inca or Manacor, the advice is clear: stay well hydrated, seek shade, and if possible, head to the beach. Of course, do so with caution and avoid the central hours of the day.

Aemet reminds us that high temperatures can affect health, especially for the elderly and children. It is recommended to drink plenty of water, use sun protection, and not leave anyone in a parked car. And, of course, to follow the evolution of alerts through official channels.
