The Calvià Town Hall has organised the annual event in memory of Diego Salvá Lezaun and Carlos Sáenz de Tejada, murdered by ETA in Palmanova on July 30, 2009. Authorities, family members, and locals attended the tribute.
The Calvià Town Hall once again gathered authorities, family members, and citizens this Thursday for the remembrance event for Civil Guards Diego Salvá Lezaun and Carlos Sáenz de Tejada, murdered by ETA 17 years ago in Palmanova. The event, which takes place every July 30, was held next to the new monument installed in the municipality in honour of the victims.
Among those present were the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual; the President of the Balearic Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne; the Brigadier General Chief of the Civil Guard in the Balearics, Alejandro Hernández Mosquera; the Government Delegate in the Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez; and the parents of Diego Salvá, Toni Salvá and Montse Lezaun, along with other political, military, and police authorities, as well as representatives of civil society and local residents.
Before the event began, attendees laid wreaths at the new monument, a piece designed and donated by local artist Carlos Terroba. The piece stands 110 centimetres tall, weighs around 207 kilos, and features an indirect green lighting system that evokes the Civil Guard uniform. Its installation was unanimously approved in the November 2025 Plenary, with votes from PP, Vox, and PSIB-PSOE.
Mayor Amengual emphasised the importance of the event, which serves to "honour the memory of Diego and Carlos" and to "demand that there be no slackening in the search, capture, and punishment of their executioners." He also expressed recognition for the Civil Guard for their work in Calvià and throughout the country, especially during the wildfires affecting the peninsula.
Montse Lezaun, Diego Salvá's mother, spoke with an emotional intervention. "No mother should outlive her child. They took him from me, but what they cannot take away is the love and pride a mother feels for her son. That is bigger than the world and no one can erase it," she stated. Lezaun assured that "they have not been able to erase Diego and Carlos" and promised to continue attending the tribute as long as she has the strength and the responsible parties do not face justice.
The Palmanova attack, which occurred on July 30, 2009, claimed the lives of the two Civil Guards when a bomb placed by ETA exploded under their vehicle in the tourist town. Since then, the Calvià Town Hall has kept their memory alive with annual events that bring together the local community and institutions.
The new monument, located in a public space in the municipality, aims to become a place of reflection and remembrance for locals and visitors. Terroba's work, with its green lighting, seeks to evoke the values of the Benemérita and keep the sacrifice of the agents present.
This year's event coincided with a context of special sensitivity towards victims of terrorism, in which institutions reaffirm their commitment to memory and justice. Mayor Amengual has insisted that the municipality does not forget its murdered neighbours and will continue to demand that the guilty be brought to justice.
For the residents of Calvià, the event represents an opportunity to show their support for the families and advocate for unity against terrorism. The attendance of numerous citizens in a personal capacity reflects the deep-rooted nature of this tribute in the community.
