Parc de les Estacions and plaza Francesc Garcia Orell will host free screenings on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 9 PM. The festival kicks off on August 3 with 'Padre no hay más que uno 5'.
The Palma City Council presented the programme for the new edition of Cinema a la Fresca this Wednesday at Can Oms, which will take place from August 3 to September 2 in two outdoor spaces: Parc de les Estacions and plaza Francesc Garcia Orell. The initiative, organised by the Department of Culture, includes 15 feature films and 7 short films, all free of charge.
Screenings will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 9 PM. Most of the projections will be held at Parc de les Estacions, while plaza Francesc Garcia Orell will host the last three, corresponding to the final week of the event.
The General Director of Music and Performing Arts, Rafel Brunet, highlighted the “diversity criterion” that guided the selection of titles, which encompass a wide variety of genres, styles, and origins, with films in Catalan, Spanish, and original versions.
The opening film will be ‘Padre no hay más que uno 5’, by Santiago Segura, on Monday, August 3. The programme also includes commercial hits, children's and animated films, and newly released productions. As a novelty, the festival pays tribute to the pioneers of cinema with the screening of two silent films: ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ (Robert Wiene, 1920) and ‘The General’s Lady’ (Buster Keaton, 1926), which will close the festival on September 2 at plaza Francesc Garcia Orell.
Productions in Catalan will have their space with ‘Casa en Flames’, by Dani de la Orden, and ‘El 47’, by Marcel Barrena. Additionally, there is a prominent place for Balearic talent, with titles such as ‘Las chicas de la estación’, by Juana Macías, which has involved the Mallorca-based production company La Perifèrica, and ‘Es gegant des Vedrà’, by Ibiza's Hèctor Escandell, based on the ‘rondalles’ of Joan Castelló Guasch.
The 2026 edition places special importance on short films, which will be screened before the feature films in some sessions. The selection includes ‘Les imatges arribaran a temps’ (Jaume Carrió), ‘La innocència’ (Miki Duran), ‘Depredador’ (Javier Fesser), ‘Horrorscope’ (Pol Diggler), ‘Coin Coin’ (Anouk Archambault, Amélie Frit, Lucile Grunder, Solenn Lelaisant, and Jeanne Marotte), ‘Vida injusta’ (Amaro Seoane), and ‘Charlie’ (Anthony Neitzke).
The presentation also featured filmmakers Bàrbara Ferrer and Montse Rodríguez, producers of ‘Las chicas de la estación’; directors Anthony Neitzke and Amaro Seoane; Andreu Fullana, producer of ‘La innocència’ and president of the Spanish Short Film Coordinator; and Jaume Muguruza, representing the MajorDocs festival, which collaborates with Cinema a la Fresca.
Brunet emphasised the City Council's support for promoting local talent, evident in the Balearic productions included in the programme. The event has established itself as a benchmark in Palma for cinematic exhibition in public spaces, offering a varied and free programme for all audiences.
Residents of Palma will be able to enjoy the screenings without prior reservation, as access is free until the capacity of each space is reached. It is recommended to arrive early to secure a spot, especially for the most popular sessions.
