The 14th edition of the La Alcudia-UA Classical Theatre Festival has sold out tickets for three of its four professional performances. The only play with available tickets is ‘L’increïble assassinat d’Ausiàs March’, which is performed in Valencian.
The archaeological site of l’Alcúdia in Elche has become a magnet for lovers of classical theatre. The 14th edition of the La Alcudia-UA Classical Theatre Festival has recorded a complete sell-out for three of the four plays scheduled within the professional block, a success that reflects the appeal of an event that combines heritage and performing arts.
The performances of ‘La Reina Brava’, by Las Niñas de Cádiz; ‘Hamlet’, by Guayominí Producciones, and ‘En mitad de tanto fuego’, by Miramedia Universe, sold out days before their premiere. The only performance still available for tickets is ‘L’increïble assassinat d’Ausiàs March’, by CRIT Companyia de Teatre, which is performed in Valencian and is aimed at an adult audience.
A programme that captivates the audience
The festival will kick off on Tuesday 7th July with ‘La Reina Brava’, a satirical drama with Shakespearean echoes that narrates the assassination of a queen hated by all. Las Niñas de Cádiz return to the festival after the success of last year's edition, bringing a proposal that combines humour, popular culture, and classical tradition.
The following day, Wednesday 8th July, CRIT Companyia de Teatre will present ‘L’increïble assassinat d’Ausiàs March’, a musical thriller with a comedic tone. The company has explained that the show is based on a police investigation to reflect on the memory and legacy of the Valencian poet:
It is a show in which, based on a police investigation, we delve into the reasons for a murder and seek the culprit. We will travel, through songs and live music and the memory that transcends time, to 15th-century Valencia and to today's Valencia. This play, also recommended for secondary school students, is the only opportunity for those who have not yet secured a ticket.
On Thursday 9th July, ‘Hamlet’, by Guayominí Producciones, will arrive, a free and family-friendly adaptation of Shakespeare's classic. The show, which combines comedy, drama, and live music, is recommended for audiences aged ten and over and carries the ‘Recommended Show’ seal from the Spanish Network of Theatres, Auditoriums, Circuits, and Publicly Owned Festivals.
A closing with an Homeric monologue and institutional act
On Friday 10th July, the professional programme will conclude with ‘En mitad de tanto fuego’, by Miramedia Universe. This is an intense monologue written by Alberto Conejero based on the figure of Patroclus and Homer's Iliad. Performed by Rubén de Eguía and directed by Xavier Alberti, the production proposes a reflection on war, desire, and the human condition. It has also been distinguished as a ‘Recommended Show’ by Redescena.
Prior to the last performance, the festival's closing act will take place, featuring speeches from Catalina Iliescu, Vice-Rector for Culture, Sport, and University Extension, and Juan Mora, Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Alicante. The festival is organised by the UA and the La Alcudia University Foundation for Archaeological Research.
More than theatre: visits, accessibility, and catering
The festival is not limited to the stage. During the performance days, the audience can enjoy guided tours of the archaeological site, literary presentations, and a catering service on site. Additionally, the festival incorporates accessibility measures for people with hearing impairments thanks to the INCLUACultura programme.
For the residents of Elche and the surrounding area, the event represents a unique opportunity to enjoy theatre in a first-rate heritage setting. Tickets for ‘L’increïble assassinat d’Ausiàs March’ are still available, and the organisers recommend not delaying: the sales pace suggests it could soon display a ‘sold out’ sign at any moment. The festival takes place from 7th to 10th July at the l’Alcúdia site in Elche.
