The traditional Festa del Cap de Bou de Talapi gathered hundreds of locals in sa Pobla on Saturday, marking the start of the patronal festivities of Sant Jaume and Santa Margalida. The opening speech was delivered by the glosadora Maria Magdalena Amengual.
More than 80 bicycles pedalled on Saturday from the possessió of Talapi to the centre of sa Pobla, defying the heatwave, to accompany the caparrot of the Cap de Bou in a parade that filled the streets of the municipality with yellow. This event, which commemorates the discovery in 1952 of a bronze bull's head from the Talayotic era, has established itself as one of the most participatory acts of the programme.
A reivindicative speech and generational change
The glosadora Maria Magdalena Amengual was in charge of delivering the opening speech of the Festa del Cap de Bou. In her address, she highlighted the value of popular culture and called on the new generations to take over the organisation so that the festival does not decline. The procession, which also included the caparrots des Grif, the Anguila carried by the Colla Infantil d’Albopàs, and the Caparrots d’estiu, paraded through the streets to the sound of the xeremiers until reaching the plaza de sa Quartera.
Saturday's event was a prelude to a programme that began on Friday with the official opening speech of the patronal festivities, delivered by Queta Socías, David, and Oriol Campaner. The latter, the only teenager in the Balearics diagnosed with FOXG1 syndrome, represents the struggle of a local family and the community's support for fundraising for research. During the same event, the cultural association Marjal en Festa received the Escut d’Or de la Vila for over 40 years of dedication to traditional Mallorcan dance.
A neo-festival with historical roots
The Festa del Cap de Bou de Talapi originated as a neo-festival that gains more followers each year. The bronze bull's head, found in 1952 on the Talapi estate, is a remnant of Talayotic culture that the locals have turned into a symbol of local identity. The massive participation, with entire families dressed in yellow, demonstrates the deep-rooted nature of a celebration that combines history, music, and tradition. In the afternoon, the festivities continued with musical performances in the square, where both young and old danced to the rhythm of the xeremiers.
For the residents of sa Pobla, this event marks the starting gun for weeks of activities that include concerts, religious events, and sports activities. The Town Hall has encouraged citizens to participate in the upcoming events, which will continue until the end of the month. The Festa del Cap de Bou is not only a tribute to the past but also an opportunity for new generations to engage in popular culture and keep alive a tradition that, as the glosadora reminded, needs new blood to endure.
