A group of activists has reported a suspected case of chronic animal abuse to the Civil Guard at a farm in Santa Margalida. The animals, including dogs, goats, and birds, are said to lack water, food, and hygiene.

The activists alerted the Civil Guard last Monday after hearing continuous and chilling barking and screeching coming from the farm. Armed officers arrived at the site and inspected the facilities, although they did not remove the animals. According to the complainants, the owner has been known to the authorities for years, and previous sanctions have not corrected the situation.

Animals in deplorable conditions

At the farm, dogs, birds, rabbits, goats, and other animals live in cramped spaces, with a shortage of water and food and a significant accumulation of excrement. The activists describe a rooster with broken legs locked up, immobilised goats, and small animals in very small cages. The lack of hygiene could pose a health risk to the area.

The owner, according to the complainants,

"shows no awareness of the harm he is causing and insists that his way of keeping the animals is completely appropriate"
. The activists are calling for the urgent confiscation of the animals and a lifetime ban preventing the owner from having more animals.

Police intervention and complaints

The Civil Guard inspected the farm on Monday and will forward the actions to Seprona, the Nature Protection Service. However, the animals were not removed, which has caused discontent among the complainants.

"Small fines have no effect. What is needed now is an immediate and lifetime ban on keeping animals, in order to finally end the suffering of the animals after so many years"
, they stated in their press release.

The residents of Santa Margalida, a town in the Llevant i Migjorn region, are closely following the case. The farm is located in a rural area, and the activists fear that the situation may repeat itself if strong measures are not taken. For now, the case is in the hands of the Civil Guard and Seprona, who will need to determine if a crime has been committed and proceed with the removal of the animals.
