The Government and the Calvià Town Hall have presented the first Sustainable Labour Mobility Pilot Plan in the Balearics, which reinforces line 104 of the TIB with three additional buses and a 17% increase in frequencies.

The Government of the Balearic Islands and the Calvià Town Hall have launched the first Sustainable Labour Mobility Pilot Plan in the islands, an initiative aimed at improving public transport for workers in the hotel sector. The plan, presented this Monday, includes the reinforcement of line 104 of the TIB and measures adopted by the hotels themselves.

The councillors José Luis Mateo and Catalina Cabrer, along with the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, and hotel representatives, unveiled the details of the plan. This is part of the Pacte Social per la Sostenibilitat and is based on a mobility study that revealed that more than half of the sector's workers already use public transport to get to their jobs.

Reinforcement of line 104 with three extra buses

The Government has added three additional buses to line 104, which connects Magaluf with Palma. Two of them began operating in June and a third was added in early July, allowing for a more than 17% increase in frequencies, with intervals of between 10 and 15 minutes for much of the day.

The provided data shows that trips on this line have grown by 17.2% compared to May and demand has increased by 8.7%, with 23,000 more users surpassing 285,000 passengers. Additionally, the need for occasional reinforcements has been halved, indicating an improvement in service efficiency.

In March, the Government had already added two 18-metre articulated buses to this line, and that same month two rapid charging pantographs were put into operation on line 123 Santa Ponça–Cas Català for the recharging of electric buses. These prior actions laid the groundwork for the current pilot plan.

New parking for bicycles and scooters in Santa Ponça

Between the end of this year and the beginning of the next, a secure parking module for bicycles and electric scooters is expected to be installed in the Santa Ponça square, one of the main interchange points in the municipality. The aim is to facilitate intermodality with different TIB lines that connect with Palma and other destinations.

For the residents of Calvià, this measure represents a real alternative to private cars, especially for short trips or to combine with the bus. The Government will study the possible gradual extension of the plan to other municipalities, as part of a broader package of actions to improve public transport in the TIB network, as well as in the train and metro service.

Hotels also join sustainable mobility

The plan also includes the implementation of best practices by hotel establishments in Calvià. Among the measures are the management of car sharing, the organisation of parking in companies, and the provision of spaces for bicycles and scooters with charging points.

Some establishments have adapted their schedules to make them compatible with public transport and have implemented continuous working hours when possible. In certain departments and times of the year, teleworking is used. Initiatives such as financial aid for employees who share vehicles or shuttle bus services with pickups at Juaneda Miramar, Ocimax, and Plaza de España have also been launched.

For workers in the tourism sector, who often have unsociable hours, these measures can provide relief in their daily lives, reducing travel time and costs associated with using a private car. The pilot plan will be in effect during the high season and its impact will be evaluated for possible expansions.
