The CEU Beato Luis Belda University Centre, affiliated with CEU San Pablo University, has appointed Dr Antonia Sampol Mayol as its director. The haematologist, head of the department at Son Espases, will lead the new campus in Secar de la Real, which will open in September with all Medicine places filled.
Dr Antonia Sampol Mayol, until now head of the Haematology department at Son Espases University Hospital, will take on the role of director of the new CEU Beato Luis Belda University Centre in Mallorca. The appointment, announced this Thursday by the academic institution, confirms CEU's commitment to a top-level healthcare profile with deep ties to the islands.
A Leading Haematologist to Head the Project
Sampol has an extensive clinical and research background in the Balearic Islands. As head of the Haematology unit at Son Espases, she has coordinated multidisciplinary teams and has driven pioneering projects in the treatment of blood diseases. Her appointment, according to CEU sources, reflects the desire to have "professionals of recognised prestige" in the teaching staff.
The new centre, which will open its doors in September, will be located at the possessió of Son Serra Perera, next to the former Riskal restaurant in Secar de la Real. The facilities will house classrooms, state-of-the-art laboratories, and clinical simulation rooms, with construction expected to be completed during the first term of the academic year.
Local Talent to Retain Young Talent
The choice of Sampol reinforces the strategy of the rector of CEU San Pablo University, Rosa Visiedo, and the general director of the foundation, Javier Tello, who have insisted that the project "is born from the Balearic Islands for the Balearic Islands." The aim is to provide a quality alternative in Health Sciences that complements the public offer and curbs the exodus of young students to the mainland.
In fact, more than 80% of the places in the Medicine degree, which are already filled, correspond to students residing in the islands. In total, the teaching staff for this first year exceeds forty local professionals, all of whom are active and have a solid track record in their respective specialties.
A Campus Under Construction with an Eye on September
While the management team finalises the details, construction of the new campus is progressing well. The former Riskal will be transformed into a space equipped with cutting-edge technology for practical training. The first Medicine students will begin classes in September, although the complete facilities will not be operational until the end of the year.
For the residents of Secar de la Real, the opening of the university centre represents an injection of activity and the arrival of hundreds of young people to the area. CEU anticipates that, when fully operational, the campus will accommodate more than a thousand students in health-related degrees.
