The Local Police of Andratx has launched a comprehensive security operation in the Port of Andratx and its access points, with special attention to taxi services, following complaints of unfair competition. The operation, which includes traffic controls and foot patrols, will continue throughout the summer.

On Friday, July 3rd, the Local Police of Andratx deployed a wide-ranging security and prevention operation in the Port of Andratx and the main access points to the municipality. The campaign, part of the summer reinforcement plan, combined traffic controls, monitoring of leisure areas, foot patrols, and specific oversight of taxi services. The operation responds to the increase in tourist activity and the need to enhance public safety in light of the rise in burglaries in occupied homes and petty thefts reported since the start of summer, especially along the waterfront of the Port of Andratx.

Traffic controls and road safety

During the operation, several vehicle checkpoints were established at access points, along with foot patrols in the port area and preventive checks in leisure establishments. As a result of the police action, nearly 60 vehicles were checked, including 12 taxis, and various actions were taken regarding traffic, public safety, and transport.

In terms of road safety, officers issued several fines for driving with an expired ITV, as well as for driving without the required headlights, an infraction that poses a risk to road safety, especially during nighttime hours. In terms of public safety, several reports were also filed for possession and consumption of narcotic substances in public spaces, as part of the preventive work carried out by the Local Police to ensure coexistence and prevent uncivil behaviour.

Specific control of the taxi sector

One of the most significant aspects of the operation was the specific control of taxi services, an action taken following various complaints from professionals in Andratx, concerned about possible unfair competition and certain practices that harm the image of the sector. During the inspection, officers informed drivers that a zero tolerance policy would be maintained against any violations of regulations.

As a result, a proposed sanction was directed to the competent Transport Department for the alleged application of a fare different from that which corresponded to the service contracted from the origin. The Local Police and the Chief’s Office emphasize that this control is not intended to be revenue-generating, but aims to protect both users and the vast majority of professionals who carry out their work with absolute professionalism.

Reinforcement plan for the entire summer

This campaign is part of a security reinforcement plan scheduled for the summer months. To this end, the Chief of the Local Police has requested the incorporation of officers through extraordinary services who will work alongside the regular night shift, allowing for an increase in operational capacity without diminishing attention to other incidents. The operations will generally take place between 18:00 and 07:00, coinciding with peak times of people in leisure and dining areas.

The Andratx Town Hall and the Local Police emphasize that these campaigns will continue throughout the summer with the dual objective of preventing crime, enhancing road safety, and ensuring compliance with regulations in those public services that are fundamental to the municipality's image as a quality tourist destination.

Residents and tourists can expect a greater police presence in the coming weeks, especially in the Port of Andratx and leisure areas. The Town Hall reminds the importance of collaborating with authorities and reporting any incidents or illegal practices.
