Firefighters and police have found the body of an elderly woman in her home in the La Soledat neighbourhood of Palma. Neighbours alerted authorities after weeks of not hearing from her.

Firefighters and the National Police discovered the body of an elderly woman on Monday in her home at number 10 Sant Damas Street, in the La Soledat neighbourhood of Palma. The woman had been dead for over a month, according to initial estimates, and it was the neighbours who raised the alarm after noticing her absence and a strong smell coming from the flat.

The alert reached the police just before eleven in the morning. When officers confirmed that no one was responding, they requested the assistance of the Bombers de Palma to force the door open. Once inside, they found the body in an advanced state of decomposition.

No signs of violence, but investigation ongoing

In the initial visual examination, officers did not observe external signs of violence on the body. Everything suggests that the death was due to natural causes, although the Homicide group of the National Police has opened an investigation to rule out any other hypotheses.

The duty court in Palma has been informed of the discovery, and a forensic doctor has been dispatched to the scene to conduct a preliminary inspection. The body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Palma, where an autopsy will be performed in the coming hours.

A solitude that went unnoticed for weeks

The case highlights the unwanted solitude experienced by many elderly people in Palma, especially in neighbourhoods like La Soledat. The woman lived alone and, according to neighbours, had no close relatives who cared for her. More than 30 days passed without anyone missing the elderly woman until the smell alerted the residents.

This incident recalls similar cases in the city, where elderly individuals have died in their homes without anyone knowing for weeks. Authorities recommend that citizens maintain regular contact with their elderly neighbours and, at any sign of alarm, call 112 or the local police.

The autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, but all indications suggest it was a natural death. Meanwhile, the investigation remains open and officers are trying to locate any relatives of the deceased.
