The Confederation of Business Associations of the Balearic Islands (CAEB) has demanded this Friday that AENA improve the management of air traffic flows at Son Sant Joan to prevent congestion during peak hours. The request comes during a meeting with the airport operator's leadership.
CAEB President Carmen Planas conveyed this Friday to AENA's leadership the need to optimise the management of air traffic flows at Palma airport to avoid the feeling of congestion that occurs during peak hours. The meeting, held at the employers' headquarters, was attended by AENA's Executive Vice President, Javier Marín; the General Director of Airports, Elena Mayoral, and the Director of Palma Airport, Tomás Melgar.
Works nearly finished and new investments
During the meeting, AENA informed that the modernisation works at Palma airport, which have involved an investment of 600 million euros, are “almost finished”. The project has included improvements to spaces and a commitment to technological equipment.
The expectation is that this same line of action will be extended to the airports of Menorca and Ibiza, where AENA plans to invest nearly 400 million euros in the 2027-2031 period. Javier Marín emphasised that these projects respond to the need to “expand and modernise the spaces; we are not talking about increasing the number of flights in any case.”
Demands from the Government and unions
In parallel, the Balearic Government, through the Balearic Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Ibassal), has requested AENA the installation of more water points and shaded areas at Palma airport to protect workers from high temperatures during the summer. This request has been supported by the CCOO union.
The Councillor for Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, and the director of Ibassal, Coloma Capó, had already conveyed these demands to the airport director in a previous meeting. Additionally, they have requested the reopening of the airport canteen so that workers have a space to eat and shelter from the heat.
Impact on users and workers
For passengers, improving the management of air traffic flows could translate into shorter waiting times and a more streamlined experience at the airport, especially during the peak tourist months. Workers, for their part, would see improved working conditions with more hydration and shaded areas.
The parties have agreed to hold further meetings to continue developing the preventive measures plan against heat and address the staff's demands. Friday's meeting is part of the contacts between CAEB and AENA initiated last summer to improve communication regarding projects in “essential infrastructures for the Balearics”.
