The National Police have arrested 80 people in Palma for motorbike thefts this year, amid an increase in thefts in the city. Two minors were arrested this week in the Arxiduc area.
The theft of motorbikes has become a growing problem in Palma. The National Police have recorded a significant increase in thefts on the streets of the city, which has led to enhanced surveillance in several neighbourhoods. Since January, the number of arrests has reached 80 people, according to police sources.
Two minors arrested in Arxiduc
The latest operation took place last Wednesday morning in the Arxiduc area. Two hooded teenagers were caught while tampering with a motorbike. A witness alerted the National Police, and several patrols from the Citizen Attention Group (GAC) responded to the scene. The youths fled on foot, but the officers managed to intercept them.
The witness stated that they had seen the suspects forcing cars days earlier in the vicinity. The motorbike showed damage to the ignition system, with loose wires. A few metres away, the police found another bike running with two helmets, which was reported as stolen. The minors had arrived at the scene on that stolen vehicle, and the driver lacked a driving licence.
The officers returned the motorbike to its owner and attempted to locate the owner of the vehicle they were tampering with. Among the seized items were helmets, balaclavas, and a wire stripping tool. The two minors were arrested and placed at the disposal of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.
Tips to prevent thefts
In light of the rise in thefts, the National Police recommend that motorbike and moped owners take extra precautions. It is essential to use anti-theft systems such as disc locks, U-locks, or chains anchored to fixed objects. They also advise parking in well-lit and visible areas, with pedestrian traffic or near security cameras.
Not leaving documentation or valuables under the seat is another key measure. The Police suggest making discreet marks to identify the vehicle and noting the chassis number. In garages, it is important to ensure that the door closes completely when entering and exiting to prevent unauthorized access.
For the residents of Palma, the increase in thefts adds to their daily concerns. Many choose to keep their bikes at home or install alarms, but the Police insist that prevention is the best tool. Patrols have intensified in neighbourhoods such as Arxiduc, Son Gotleu, and Pere Garau, where most of the thefts are concentrated.
The arrest data reflects police efforts, although sources admit that there is still work to be done. Citizen collaboration, like that of the witness who alerted the officers, is key to stopping this wave of thefts. Motorbike owners in Palma can breathe a little easier knowing that the Police are on alert, but caution is always advisable.
